When to go

New York is a fantastic holiday destination no matter when you wish to visit, with cold and potentially snowy winters complemented by warm and sunny summers. However, the weather in New York is famously unpredictable, with spring and early summer particularly susceptible to rain.

The summer boasts temperatures between 25°C and 35°C, accompanied by humidity and plentiful sunshine. Lightweight shirts and shorts are ideal from June through to August.

The New York winter has the complete opposite, with temperatures in many areas dropping well below 0°C. While there is still an endless list of things to do here at this time, it is advisable to take plenty of warm layers when travelling between November and March.

What to see

Manhattan is home to many of New York's most famous landmarks. You can take a boat trip to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty, or go over to the immigrant haven of Ellis Island. Back on the mainland you can visit the impressive Brooklyn Bridge or head to the financial district and pay your respects at the site of 9/11.

The Empire State Building is the tallest skyscraper in New York, while Midtown Manhattan also offers the spectacular New York Public Library with its giant lion statues outside.

Those with an interest in the history of this enormous city can visit the numerous museums, with the American Museum of Natural History offering a great day out, with one of its highlights being one of the world's largest collections of dinosaur remains.

One of the most famous parks in the world, Central park covers 850 acres of beautifully manicured gardens and features ice rinks, Belvedere Castle and Central Park Zoo and Wildlife Centre.

Those looking for a little more entertainment can go to see one of the many Broadway shows that entice huge crowds on a daily basis. New York also boasts international restaurants and some renowned department stores such as Bloomingdales and Macys, while Fifth Avenue offers an almost unrivalled array of shops.
